Letter to Cousin

Dear Amy,
I am very excited to begin my profession in Public Relations. I want let you know exactly what I will be doing with my degree in this field.
Public Relation Specialists are somewhat of a mediator for a company. I will be in charge of handling crisis management whenever it is to arise. As with any company, as you know with our parents companies, there is always a need for someone to take care of problems in a professional way to help resolve the issue.
A PR Specialist also handles many other items concerning a company, including making sure a companies employees are happy and helping to resolve any issues they may have. I want to make sure the employees are taken care of and their concerns are heard, since really they are the backbone that makes the company successful. I will be able to do this by conducting surveys, planning special events for the employees and making sure their needs are met.
I will also write the news releases for the company that I work for that will inform the public through the different media outlets in our area. These will inform the residents in our community of events that are happing within our company. I will write such things as feature releases, or even provide information and the truth about bad situations that have happened with our company.
My goal is to be able to work for the city that I live in. I would be able to inform the residents of different happenings within the city through newsletters presented to them through different media outlets, such as the internet or paper mail that could come with their monthly utility bill. I hope to be able to design a functional website that people can access to get the most up-to-date information about our community. The website can also perform as a two-way communication tool for the residents and their city officials. It will be very important to me to have the most honest and informative information for them to access at their will through different communications. Designing the proper brochures for the city should be informative as well, highlighting the different traits and uniqueness of the community.
No matter what company that I work for, a very important aspect of my job will be to write speeches for either myself to present or others in the company. These speeches must be informative and completely honest in order to help keep our credibility with the people that we are presenting them to. It is important, especially during a time of crisis, to be honest and present the whole truth along with showing compassion and concern for others outside of the company.  These speeches will be designed to help protect them as well from criticism and false accusations.
I will also be joining the Public Relations Society of America after I graduate. This will be a great resource for me to have and to follow. The PRSA has a code of ethics that I will abide by to help guide me in my profession. It covers such things as advocacy, honesty, loyalty, and fairness, along with many other things.
Amy, I am so excited to begin my new life in this profession.  I hope that my letter helps you to better understand what I will be doing while working in the Public Relations field.
Best Regards,
Deidra Quire

  1. Well done. I like how you mentioned a number of media outlets and gave specific examples of how you would use each of them in PR.
